Massage works in magnificent ways by easing stress and pain, calming the nervous system, increasing circulation, loosening tight muscles, stimulating internal organs, and even enhancing skin tone and appearance. Even if it did none of these things, most would agree that nothing beats the feeling of calm and relaxation after a skillful nurturing massage session. Fortunately, there are ways to prolong the benefits of your massage or bodywork session. One of the many ways to extend the benefits of your bodywork session is the FREQUENECY at which you receive a bodywork session.
A common question for my patients is: “how often should I get a massage (or bodywork session)?” I always give a simple, but changing response. It honestly depends on why you are seeking massage in the first place that will determine how often you should have a session.
- When it comes to dealing with the general tension of everyday commutes, computer work, and time demands, a monthly massage (every 3-4 weeks) may be enough to sustain you.
- On the other hand, if you are seeking massage for chronic pain, you may very well need more frequent treatments (closer to weekly or every 2 weeks).
- If you’re addressing an acute/severe injury or dealing with high levels of stress on a daily basis or in a concentrated amount of time, you may need more frequent sessions. In some situations, I have had patients come for a session every few days until we were able to get them to a state that required less frequent visits.
Remember, massage is amazing for your muscles. It encourages healing by promoting the flow of blood & lymph, relieving tension, stimulating nerves, & stretching & loosening muscles and connective tissue to keep them elastic. Do not be afraid to show you muscles and body some love. Make massage and/or bodywork a part of you wellness routine.
